How to Know It’s Time for an Oil Change

Most of us learned in driver’s ed, or when we got our first car, to have the oil changed every 3,000 miles. But as technology has advanced, that 3,000 mile standard has shifted. Many car manufacturers have different standards per vehicle, so the old rule of thumb doesn’t hold true across the board anymore. There are a few solid ways to recognize when it’s time to bring in your car for an oil change, and why not get it for a great price with great service at Joe’s Service Department!

Is It Time for an Oil Change?

1. Check your vehicle owner’s manual.

If you don’t have one lurking in your glove box, you can download your car’s manual online. Recommended oil change intervals vary greatly from one vehicle manufacturer to another, so the best place to find out what’s best for your car is in your owner’s manual. It also depends on how hard you run your car. Oil changes are needed more often if you frequently drive in stop-and-go traffic or extreme temperatures, if you tow trailers, or if you drive many short distances where the engine doesn’t reach full operating temperature. All of these situations put stress on your car’s engine, making it work harder.

2. Listen for engine noises.

Are you noticing more engine noises than usual? Does the engine shake when you’re idling? These can be signs you need an oil change. Some other indications are excess exhaust, ticking signs when you first turn on the car, and of course, the “check engine” dashboard light. If your engine is showing any of these signs, you’re definitely due for a check-up.
