Whether you recently moved into the Indianapolis area or you’ve just never been able to find a good auto mechanic, these tips are for you. While we’d love to tell you to just “trust us” and bring your car to Joe’s Service Department, we know you need peace of mind that your car is in good hands. Therefore, these steps can help you get rid of the unreliable auto shops and on the right path to quality auto repairs.
1. Don’t rush the search.
When your check engine light is on or you’re due for an oil change, you don’t want to delay in scheduling an appointment for your car. However, take at least an hour (more time if you have it) to do a thorough inquiry.
2. Gather references.
A quick shout-out to friends on social media or a call to your neighbor or co-worker can often result in good recommendations for mechanics in the Indianapolis area. Ask your friends or family members for details on the service they received and why they’d recommend that car repair shop (or why they would avoid it).
3. Make a list of possibilities.
Jot down a short list of mechanics you want to research a bit further. You can make your list based on the recommendations or on service review websites you may have browsed.
4. Find out more.
Get on the mechanic’s website, and do some digging. Check out the customer reviews, and read through their certifications and services (tire alignment, brakes, maintenance, and so on). You may be able to cross a few places off your list based on your findings.
5. Get a quote.
Call the mechanics you’re considering, and describe the problem you’re having with your car. Ask if they’ll give you an over-the-phone estimate (provided that they don’t find any other problems). Many places will want you to bring it in first, but some may give you a rough idea of what you can expect to pay for a particular repair based on your vehicle’s make and model.
6. Trust your instincts.
Once you feel confident to move forward, select the car repair shop that seems to be the best fit. Go with the mechanic with whom you feel most comfortable.
