When Should I Schedule an Oil Change?
Every vehicle has a different requirement for how frequently the oil should be changed. Newer vehicles, for example, can go anywhere between 5,000 and 10,000 miles before needing a change. Your vehicle owner’s manual will provide the specific details of when and how often you should change the oil. If you don’t put a lot of miles on your vehicle, it is still important to have the oil changed twice a year to protect the engine from damage.
Should I Check the Oil Level Often?
We recommend popping the hood at least once per month to check the oil level; low oil levels could signify a leak that merits immediate attention. Similarly, the oil should appear brown or black; a milky appearance or the presence of metal particles signify trouble. To check the oil, simply pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe it clean. Then, fully insert the dipstick back into the tube, remove it once again, and look to see where the oil is on the stick. The dipstick will have markings to indicate whether your levels are low, high, or just right.
What Kind of Oil Does My Car Need?
There are two primary types of motor oil: standard and synthetic. Again, we recommend checking your vehicle owner’s manual to determine the right weight and type of oil for your vehicle. Synthetic oil is far more expensive than standard oil, but it is more effective at resisting breakdown and withstanding high temperatures. For vehicles that only make short trips, endure extreme temperatures, or are prone to sludge buildup in the engine, synthetic oil may be the right choice.
